Welcome. Edgartown News was born from the simple fact that I have ink and Dektol in my veins and I need to write and photograph more than I need air or food, and from my love for this little town where I grew up and raised my family, the town I have left a few times but can't quite shake for good. Here you will find the wanderings and musings, photographs and commentary; the people, places, and happenings - past and present - of a small island town: my home town.

Saturday Morning Free Form

An early morning roam-about on the bike, toting the new TG6 and the Lumix (for learning and comparison purposes); foggy beginnings with hints that the sun would be breaking through (and it did, turning out sunny and hot).

Bicycle Browsings

Bicycling on the Island hasn't been this pleasant in many, many years, all due to the fact that we are still semi shut down around here and there's much less traffic than usual, so I've been taking advantage of the situation and getting out and about on my bike - with the Lumix, of course - at least once a day (I am also working on shedding some of my winter and lock-down poundage).

Okay - this was actually grabbed from a West Tisbury field on one of the rare times I've used my car (I think I've been on the same tank of gas for three months).

Albion. The best part of getting out and about via bicycle is connecting with people.  I found Albion fishing for squid off of the town wharf.

It's Fiddlehead Season

It's fiddlehead season - one of my favorite things about spring. Nope, I've never eaten one, and don't plan on it, but I do love the way they look. They change quickly - unfurling into a broad green fern leaf - so if you're not out and about in the woods and meadows at the right time you'll miss them. (and happy to see that the little Lumix is still delivering)

I'm behind on my posts, but it's for an honest reason - I've decided to put the past ten year's worth of Edgartown News into hard-copy and have been busy with InDesign, going over every post, from the beginning. Sometimes it feels like a daunting task, but it mostly is fun to get my hands on stuff I've written and photographed over the years. I'll have a few volumes for the coffee table when I'm done.

This project started when I inquired about having a blog-book company doing it and by the time I finished examining their efforts I realized I could do it myself, but better. Luckily, I have kept most of the photos for the blog in one handy location. I still have to do some copying, pasting, and laying out - almost, but not quite - like recreating the blog post. By the time I've put in a few hours of working in past tense I have little time or energy to put into recent photos and ideas.

I will get back to the present tense again sometime soon.

Walk to the Bend

I'm not saying I'm running out of things to photograph, but it sure does feel like it during these dulled-down corona days.

There was a time when I walked the two miles (and back) to Bend in the Road Beach almost every day. It's been awhile. I'd like to get back to this habit. The good news is I'm getting a handle on the Lumix's macro capabilities (hint: MF).
