Welcome. Edgartown News was born from the simple fact that I have ink and Dektol in my veins and I need to write and photograph more than I need air or food, and from my love for this little town where I grew up and raised my family, the town I have left a few times but can't quite shake for good. Here you will find the wanderings and musings, photographs and commentary; the people, places, and happenings - past and present - of a small island town: my home town.

Kite-boarding at Philbin

Feeling a little stir-crazy on Thursday, I headed up-Island in my newly scoured and vacuumed (following hauling two loads of brush and debris to the dump) Grand(ma) Caravan. I even remembered to grab the big gun with the 600mm lens on my way out the door.

First stop: Squibnocket; cold and very windy. Almost too windy to hold the small Lumix.

Then, onward to Gay Head.

Imagine my excitement when I caught a glimpse of these colorful flowers blooming above Philbin Beach. A sight for sore eyes, indeed, especially since I had the big camera and lens with me.

I'll admit that this old surfer lives vicariously through these youngsters - my heroes.

Sun and Surf at Moshup Beach

The Edgartown contingent packed up and headed to Moshup Beach today for a little family fun in the sun, with an awareness that summer is short and winter is long, and that summer is more than half over now. And a fun time it was. The great thing about Gay Head is it's as far away from home as we can get without taking the ferry, and it truly is another world up there. The southwesterly wind is fresh off the water, and the sun even feels closer on the western-most end of the Island. Then add the clay cliffs, the boulders - glacial detritus deposited here eons ago - and the rolling waves, and you've got all the ingredients for an exotic Sunday afternoon. Okay, I'll confess: I was also eager to have another go with my new waterproof camera.

It still feels totally counter-intuitive to walk into the surf with a camera, I must say.

Gay Head Long Exposures

The time and tide were just right this evening for trying out some long exposures up in Gay Head. It was foggy and mystical and desolate - exactly what I had hoped for.

Gay Head

The Edgartown girl went to Gay Head yesterday, to the beach. I wasn't planning on swimming, but I couldn't help myself. The ocean water is colder than Bend in the Road, but it felt wonderful and definitely woke me up and cleared the brain fog.
