Welcome. Edgartown News was born from the simple fact that I have ink and Dektol in my veins and I need to write and photograph more than I need air or food, and from my love for this little town where I grew up and raised my family, the town I have left a few times but can't quite shake for good. Here you will find the wanderings and musings, photographs and commentary; the people, places, and happenings - past and present - of a small island town: my home town.

The Photo-essay that Started it All

Dave Corcoran

June 9, 2009. Last night, on my evening walk (oh, how I love living in town), I happened upon Dave Corcoran walking up Main Street. Dave has been a familiar and friendly presence in Edgartown for a number of years, works down at Thor's bike shop - Sam Norton's old place at #1 Main Street. A musician, mechanical genius, and artisan, Dave once built a beautiful, albeit unusual, stand-up bass (that retained elements of the tree - branches and all - as I remember it).

Summer nights, you'll find Dave sitting on the bench in front of the paper store, corner of Main and North Water, playing guitar. He plays and sings really well and usually draws a pretty good crowd of after-supper ice-cream seekers. David is also an extraordinary whistler.

Dave has recently returned from a x-country  bike ride and has lots of stories to tell. Seriously, this dude rode a bicycle, propelled by his own two legs, across the entire United States.

To be continued...

Missing My Column

Edgartown Great Plains

June 18, 2009
I walked downtown the other evening after supper, as I frequently do, and met a friend, Dave Corcoran, along the way. We stopped and chatted - Dave telling stories while I listened and snapped photos. Later I posted one of the photos on Digital Grin, one of the photography forums I frequent, along with a short blurb about our encounter. Doing this reminded me of how much I loved writing my weekly column in the Martha's Vineyard Times - and how much I miss it. This started me thinking, maybe I'll start my own Edgartown news column. And, lo and behold, as is often the case shortly after I allow a thought to surface to the level of putting it into words - here it is.
