Welcome. Edgartown News was born from the simple fact that I have ink and Dektol in my veins and I need to write and photograph more than I need air or food, and from my love for this little town where I grew up and raised my family, the town I have left a few times but can't quite shake for good. Here you will find wanderings and musings, photographs and commentary; the people, places, and happenings - past and present - of a small island town: my home town.

Life Continues to Spring Forth As If Nothing Strange Is Happening

It turns out that I don't have to leave my property to find photo opps. Here's what's happening in my yard right now.

My yard is dotted with little white violets, like stars and constellations in a green sky. My mother always loved these little violets (how can a violet be white, anyway?) and we were never allowed to mow the lawn until they were finished blooming, sometime around or after Easter (coming right up).

Some type of ground cover, given to me by my neighbor Sande. It blooms with red spiky flowers later in the summer. I do not know its name.

Corona Daze

Yes, daze, as in "We are all in a daze because of the corona virus and have no idea what day it is anymore or even if it's day or night;" and corona, as in "On Tuesday the sun came out."

Three of my grandchildren live only a few blocks away, and even though we aren't going into each other's homes right now, we thought it would be fine for them to come and play in my yard - the yard they love so well - and I love having them here. We kept our distance while they (Ethan and Zeke; Orion did not come this time) dug in the dirt, made mud, and swung on the swings, and I worked in the garden.

Zeke asked if he could come over every day. I said, "Sure, we'll call it recess," since they are doing their school work at home. I asked them how they like doing schoolwork at home and Ethan told me it was "Kind of weird because school is for work and home is for play." Good point. I took the opportunity, as I love to do, to tell them about life in the olden days when we wore our best clothes to school - dresses for girls (well, umm...except for this tomboy who managed to get away with pants her entire grammar school career, but they were clean) and slacks and button down shirts for boys, and shiny shoes - no sneakers - and when we came home, we immediately changed into our play clothes. Our garb was a clear signal as to whether we were in school mode or play mode.

There's something so therapeutic about smoothing a mound of dirt with a rake, isn't there? I remember a few years back you could buy a small desk-top box with sand and a small rake for the office for relaxation purposes. It's elemental, really, and the reason, I'm sure, that we love the beach.

The view from my front porch these days: not a soul to be seen. It was almost warm enough for fiddle tunes but I didn't last too long because of the chilly wind.

My Little Town, Early Morning

On Monday morning I finally managed to get out early enough to be the first one into (and out of) Stop&Shop for Geezer Hour, and this is what I saw when I returned home, around 6:30am.

Paschal Moon 2020

I almost missed this due to the fact that I haven't used the R for awhile and could not figure out - for the life of me - how to switch from video mode to still mode. Plus I arrived later than I had intended - by the seat of my pants, basically. I should have left the house earlier. The story of my life. So there I am, moon rising, me on my phone doing a frantic search on EOS R modes. Got it in the nick of time, but not without a near-heart attack. I had been planning this for a few days and the conditions were perfect (they rarely are, here on the Island - usually the clouds roll in right around sunset) and this was important to me because it's the Passover moon.

This was a new location for me for moon-shooting, and the other problem was that with the 600mm lens I could almost not get far enough away to get the entire scene.

Once I got set up, though, I was happy with the the R's performance. I've been dedicating so much time to the Lumix lately that I've fallen behind on the R. Gotta get back to it.

Today was a good one, in spite of the ongoing corona circumstances - a full report tomorrow.

And, at the end, almost as an afterthought (sometimes I forget I'm even wearing it), from the Lumix. Will the real moon please stand up.

My drive home on Beach Road. It could be a lot worse.

Twilight, the Best Light

Okay, we made it through another day - one day closer to normal?

The day started off gray, raw, and blustery; remnants of yesterday's rain, but by mid-afternoon the sun was shining and all seemed new and washed and hopeful. I was caught up with indoor projects most of the day but broke out for a walk during the dinner hour and was not disappointed. On some level I could be totally sick of the same-old-same-old; on the other hand, it's a matter of perspective, light, and attitude.

Just for Fun, April 2, 2020

On my way home from Oak Bluffs I found one of the Douglas boys kite boarding - one more occasion when I wished I had packed the big camera and lens. But it's all good. There's something freeing about traveling with a small camera and staying within its limitations. In the old days I wanted more, and bigger, and the next new thing. Now I'm enjoying the simplicity. I was able to capture a fair representation of a ten minute roadside stopover with the Lumix (and would have done better if the young Mr. Douglas had not been wrapping up his session - and also realized, afterwards, that for these situations, it would be better to use touch-focus). Okay, I guess the east wind is good for something.

Color, April 1, 2020

I set out on Wednesday with the sole intention of finding color, and the best place I could think of, outside of Ennis over in County Clare, is in Oak Bluffs at the camp grounds - no comparison to Ennis, and this confirms my theory about why every house in Clare is painted in every color imagineable - but a walk through the grounds gave me the boost I was looking for on a cold/raw/gray/sleetish March day.
