"how they do it in the city", I must say that I am very impressed with your report, and willing to make an exception to my rules.
Your article is thoughtful, well documented, and intelligently presented. You have offered some very important ideas for a change that primarily will address safety issues. I am all for that!
Also, I am a strong proponent for anything that slows down traffic.
I hope that you can find the proper venue for a serious review of your work. Perhaps the traffic study committee, I think we used to have one. I am not just sure where the most effective place would be to express your concerns.
At any rate, "Bravo", and good luck. I certainly will be happy to support what you propose.
AllouiseALMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09427338292532032229noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3490952779546441535.post-39496847769854291632012-02-21T13:10:13.887-05:002012-02-21T13:10:13.887-05:00PS - while I also think the street is too narrow f...PS - while I also think the street is too narrow for proper-sized bike lanes, it may be wide enough to have a full sharrow going in one direction (east), with a bike lane going in the other direction (west), a la Longwood Avenue in my examples above.

As mentioned, this could also have the benefit of slowing traffic into town and moving it along on the way out, which could alleviate some of the congestion.

Or -- sharrows going in both directions.

What has to happen is a radical change in thinking, here - the quantum leap from the philosophy of getting bikes out of the way to an attitude of integration and cooperation, and Edgartown is in the position of leading the way right now.Sara Piazzahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10906903100078539593noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3490952779546441535.post-70808302555173857092012-02-21T12:54:56.710-05:002012-02-21T12:54:56.710-05:00Yes, the street is definitely too narrow for safe,...Yes, the street is definitely too narrow for safe, regulation bike lanes. The only way to go is full sharrows. But along with the sharrows, there must be a massive effort to educate the public as well as intense regulation of vehicle speed - seriously enforced with a strong police presence for at least the first couple of years. First, we have to train the locals to slow down, then they will set the standard for the summer people.

People will hate it at first, but eventually, it will catch on.

Thanks, Jim.Sara Piazzahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10906903100078539593noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3490952779546441535.post-24634400116055496012012-02-21T12:37:20.284-05:002012-02-21T12:37:20.284-05:00Sara, some of us have begged Edg to paint sharrows...Sara, some of us have begged Edg to paint sharrows along that strip (I think the street is too narrow for full bike lanes, and the storm grates present issues). Please ask Stuart Fuller, Chief B., and the selectmen to paint sharrows. I also think they need to ticket wrong-way and sidewalk riding, as well as helmetless riding for kids 16 and under. - Jim MillerAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3490952779546441535.post-25157582068017672482012-02-21T09:06:58.969-05:002012-02-21T09:06:58.969-05:00Hi, Sue - thanks for reading, and for your comment...Hi, Sue - thanks for reading, and for your comment.

Bottom line - there's a new model for bikes and cars; it's called sharing, respect, and cooperation.

The old model - of shoving bikes off to the side, into the gutter - the most unsafe place for a cyclist - has got to end, and I am hoping that Edgartown will blaze the trail into the new paradigm.

Not only will the cyclist - you know, those hundreds of thousands of people we invite here and rent bikes to - be safer, but the side-benefit will be a slowing of the traffic.

And who knows - maybe, if we give the bikes the full lane going into town - slowing the cars to 15mph - and let the bikes have a full, safe side-lane on the way out of town with cars beside the bikes, iow, cars traveling more slowly going into town than coming out - this could result in less automobile congestion down town.Sara Piazzahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10906903100078539593noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3490952779546441535.post-46763916972735426742012-02-20T21:58:59.099-05:002012-02-20T21:58:59.099-05:00Good ideas Sara!!
